BILOXI (WLOX) --- Spectators watched in awe Sunday as the power boats cut across the waters of the Mississippi Sound.
Marc Granet and Scott Begovich, the driver and throttle man for the Miss Geico boat, joined the crowd in victory after winning the extreme turbine class competition. The duo worked hard to capture the title of fastest boat in the race, and broke their own record.
"We hit speeds in this race that we have never hit before in our career; over 190 miles an hour we went on the straightaways," Begovich said.
"It all came together today. Definitely had some butterflies going into this race, but you know, we were able to hold our line, keep the race going and a good, clean, fair race. In the end, the last four or five laps, we knew we had him tailed, and I bought it home for the win," Granet said.
This is the first yearly race of the Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association. Throttle man Begovich says it's the most difficult course they'll race all year.
"All the turns, all the channel markers, all the casinos, it's a very, very difficult and scary course," Begovich said.
The series has grown by leaps and bounds hosting races throughout the country.
"Obviously, the word has gotten out, and we've got racers from all over the world. We've got so many exciting things coming up, and race teams joining us every year. We're so excited. This is like coming home," said Ellen Greenleaf, the spokesperson for the Offshore Super Series.
